TP4056 USB Type‑C LiPo/Li‑ion Battery Charging Module with Protection🔋
A compact, high‑reliability TP4056-based charger board for single‑cell 3.7V Li‑ion/LiPo batteries. It features a USB Type‑C input, integrated over‑charge/over‑discharge protection, and a convenient power‑path that powers the load from the 5V input when available. Ideal for Arduino, Raspberry Pi (with a boost converter), and other microcontroller projects requiring safe battery charging and management of electronics components and modules.
✨ Key Features
- USB Type‑C input (5V) for modern connectivity and easy powering ⚡
- 1A max charge current for fast, reliable charging of single‑cell packs
- Integrated protection: over‑charge, over‑discharge, and over‑current safeguards 🛡️
- Power‑path behavior: load is powered from the 5V input when present; otherwise from the battery
- Status LEDs: 🔴 charging, 🔵 fully charged
- Solder pads retained for DIY: input pads alongside the Type‑C connector for flexible wiring
📐 Technical Specifications
- Input voltage: 4.5–5.0 V DC (recommend regulated 5 V)
- Maximum charging current: 1000 mA (factory‑set)
- Charge cut‑off (termination) voltage: 4.2 V ± 1%
- Battery over‑discharge protection: 2.5 V (typical cutoff)
- Discharge over‑current protection: 3 A (typical)
- Battery type supported: Single‑cell 3.7 V Li‑ion/LiPo only (not for 2S/3S packs)
🧩 Connectors & Pinout
- USB Type‑C port: 5 V input (no USB‑PD negotiation; 5 V only)
- IN+ / IN‑: Alternative 5 V input solder pads (parallel to Type‑C)
- B+ / B‑: Battery positive/negative terminals
- OUT+ / OUT‑: Load output terminals (voltage equals battery voltage)
Important: The OUT voltage follows the battery (≈3.0–4.2 V). It is not a regulated 5 V output. Use a suitable DC‑DC boost converter if you need a stable 5 V rail for boards like Arduino or Raspberry Pi accessories.
🚦 LED Indicators
- 🔴 Red = Charging
- 🔵 Blue = Fully charged (charge terminated)
🛠️ Instructions for Use
- Connect the battery to B+ and B‑ (observe polarity).
- Connect a regulated 5 V source via the USB Type‑C port (or IN+/IN‑ pads).
- Wire your load to OUT+ and OUT‑ (e.g., a step‑up module, sensor node, or other electronics components).
- When 5 V input is present, the load is powered from the input; when disconnected, the load draws from the battery.
- If the battery voltage falls below about 2.5 V, the output is automatically disabled to protect the cell. Apply 5 V to recharge and re‑enable.
📝 Important Notes
- Initial activation: After first connecting a battery, there may be no output. Apply 5 V once to activate the protection circuit.
- Power source capability: Use a charger or adapter capable of ≥1 A output; low‑current sources may not charge properly.
- Load during charging: For best results and accurate charge termination, disconnect or minimize the load on the OUT pins while charging.
- Cable compatibility: Supports USB‑A to USB‑C cables. USB‑C to USB‑C (PD) is not supported.
- Single‑cell only: Do not use with series battery packs (2S/3S). This module is for one cell only.
- Polarity: Reversed connections can damage the module and battery. Double‑check wiring.
💡 Engineering Tips
- If you need 5 V for Arduino or Raspberry Pi accessories, add a boost converter from OUT to 5 V.
- Many TP4056 boards set charge current via an RPROG resistor (default ≈1 A). Reducing charge current is recommended for smaller cells.
- Ensure adequate thermal dissipation at higher charge currents.
🔎 Typical Applications
- Portable microcontroller projects (Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi Pico with regulator)
- Battery‑backed sensors, IoT nodes, and wearables
- DIY electronics modules requiring safe LiPo charging and protection
